It Took a Pandemic to Finally Get Me Into Running
And now I’m finally seeing what the hype is about.
If you asked the couch25k app, it’d tell you that I hated it and it wouldn’t be wrong. The idea of wanting to get outside, lace up my shoes, and run long distances didn’t seem like something I could ever identify with. And to be honest, the app is done with me breaking up with it only to come crawling back a year later.
But running seemed to be the solution to everything. Have trouble losing weight? Go running. Need to get a stronger heart? Running. Bored? Go running. Spend most of your time curled up in a fetal position with the overwhelming knowledge that time moves along at a steady pace regardless of whether we’re ready or not? Oh, yeah. Running!
I’ve given it the ‘ol college try more times than I can count using these methods:
- Couch25k, both free AND paid versions
- Signing up for a 5k in hopes that it’ll make me run
- Used Hal Higdon’s 10k training plan
- Tried to get my runner boyfriend to force me to run
- Got a dog
- Used the fact I could easily get kidnapped as motivation to have a fighting chance
What could possibly motivate me to start running if all of those didn’t work?
