Sobriety Won’t Fix Everything But It Will Help

Not everything will be perfect right away.

When you read articles here on sobriety and recovery, it can seem like your life does a 180 and everything is wonderful once you give up alcohol. I lurked for a while on forums talking about being sober that made it seem like drinking was the only thing keeping me from true happiness. Trying to save a marriage? Give up alcohol and it’ll seem like it’s your honeymoon phase again! Having a hard time finding a job? You’ll get the one you’ve always wanted if you just went sober!

Once I gave up drinking and nothing was magically corrected, it did make things harder for me in my sober journey. I felt for a while like maybe sobriety wasn’t worth it, that I was making things hard on myself for no good reason. It felt like a struggle for the longest time but I’m glad that I pushed through that and saw the other side.

For the sake of transparency, here’s what I personally thought sobriety would immediately fix and how it actually just helped move things along.

Weight

I assumed the pounds would fall off once I quit and it seemed like it made sense- I drank a lot of heavy IPAs, I ate junk food when I was drunk, and I didn’t sleep well.
