Spider Ring Cupcakes and Fox-Tail Doughnuts
A poem remembering the good times with my alcoholic father.
I was young, excited
Early rise before the dawn
Hushed voices
Don’t wake anyone else up
It was our time
Father and daughter
Wear long pants my father said
We’ll be going through tall grass
To get to the spot I remember as ours
A spot along the river
We’d have fishing poles and fish for hours
Single gas station along the way
A display of vanilla cupcakes
Orange and green buttercream
Halloween was near
There were spider rings in the frosting
I wore the ring all day
You were in such a good mood
I could get a second treat
A fox-tail doughnut
Glazed and chocolate twist
I didn’t notice the 12 pack of beer
That it didn’t make it back home
I just remembered being with you
And spider ring cupcakes and fox-tail doughnuts
