The lies I was told about alcohol

I never should have believed them.

There are a lot of things that alcohol told me through the years. Now that I’ve been sober for a while, I know that most of those things aren’t true.

But it blows my mind how much movies, advertisements, even our modern culture not only normalizes alcohol but makes it seem really cool. As if you couldn’t be cool if you abstained from alcohol. That you’d be missing out on things.

The best way to get through a break up is alcohol

In every movie I have ever seen involving a break up, the first thing that’s recommended is to get drunk. Friends come over to make you feel better and the remedy is to get fucked up.

The last thing you need to do when you’re going through a break up is to drink. Sure, it might be fun to drink your problems away for one night. Your friends take you out to the bar or the club to forget your heartbreak. You dance the night away and do shots of tequila, saying fuck the world. What’s left out are the parts in between where you’re checking your phone to see if there’s a missed call. The fear that you’ll be alone and the unknown future that’s suddenly presented itself to you. That as you get drunker and drunker, you make calls to your ex because you’re drunk and you’re lonely.
