Why Catwoman is the theme of my goals.

When I was younger, I thought I had an idea of what a role model should be. Media growing up though wasn’t supportive of strong AND intelligent women. I grew up with women who might be timid or weird but they were intelligent.

Granted, I know that there were women in books, TV shows, etc that showed strong women but I had a really sheltered life. A very Christian life. I was taught that as a female, my role was to assist males and eventually get married into a life where I would take on the caregiver role.

My parents still believe in this type of relationship to this day and wonder why I’m concerned with developing my career over settling down and having children.

Women characters were just male characters with longer hair or they were hopeless romantics

So my childhood was mainly gravitating towards the male characters in books and TV shows. I loved how fierce they were and how they didn’t let anything stand in their way. I also liked the characters such as Xena but it didn’t click that it wasn’t just a fictional world that a woman could be that confident. Even though I was seeing some strong characters, it was hard to relate to them. It took me a while to figure it out but in the end, it was because they seemed like the male characters I…
