Why Do We Keep Drinking if We Want to Lose Weight?

The answer is more obvious than you would think.

Everyone knows it at a high level but it’s something that we try to forget. We might even drink to forget. A quick google search can tell you that drinking and health don’t mix but we keep trying to make excuses to keep doing it. We live for the studies that talk about the health benefits of wine for our hearts or how one beer a day can actually help us.

Even though articles about moderation seem to have more advice about not drinking if you want to get fit. The phrase, “you can’t out train a bad diet”, has been around for a while for good reason. It’s accepted that high calorie drinks like sodas can’t be part of a healthy diet while we still pick up a six pack of beer. We, myself included, have skipped the gym more times than we’d like because of a hangover.

So why do we do it? Why do we hold on to our need to drink even though we understand that it’s not good for our goals?

The human need for connection

We instinctively are hesitant towards ideas that might isolate us from the rest of humanity. Sobriety is part of our collective behavior; we don’t want to be us against the world but us with the world.
